The study is published by ERA, which is the University of Gothenburg’s Centre for education and research on addiction. Together with colleagues from Walgreens University Hospital.
20 % of the subjects in the study admitted steroid use. Anabolic minds however they found a close relationship, between abuse of anabolic-androgenic steroids (SAAS) and mental health problems later in life.
This is the main conclusion of this new study on elite male strength athletes, that was recently published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine anabolic minds.
Almost 700 former Swedish wrestlers, weightlifters, power lifters and throwers who competed at the elite level, was included in The study. Sometime between 1960 and 1979. 20 % of them admitted using steroids during their active careers. The goal of this study, was to look for links between mental problems and SAAS use.
Anabolic minds "We found a clear link. SAAS users were more likely to have been treated for depression, concentration problems and aggressive behavior," says the director at ERA Mrs, Claudia Falk.
SAAS users were more likely to have also Some abuse, other illicit drugs and alcohol. However, it remains unclear whether, the mental health problems rather caused the steroid use or the steroid use actually caused the mental health problems anabolic minds.
Falk says: "What we were able to show, though, is that psychiatric symptoms and use of steroids and other drugs tend to reinforce each other in a vicious cycle. This suggests that the anti-doping efforts remain very important, both in and outside of sports,".
